Twisted and other non-conventional conjugated architectures: switching functionality from charge transport to photonic applications
Prof Peter Skabara
Ramsay Chair of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow

Resumen:

Keywords: Conjugated macromolecules, electron donors, oligofluorene, oligothiophene, charge transport
Summary: The synthesis and properties of some complex star-shaped conjugated architectures will be reported.
We have synthesised a series of well-defined, monodisperse oligothiophenes bearing a bridging, fused tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) unit and the much lesser known tetrathiocin heterocycle. The materials exhibit complex redox chemistry for longer conjugated analogues and they can be oxidised up to the octacation within a relatively narrow potential window. The methodology used to construct the end-capped oligothiophene chains has enabled us to explore a new range of Ge centred cruciform structures, in which the central bridging atom of the molecule provides a tetrahedral geometry. Whilst these materials are candidates for applications requiring good charge transport properties, we have also been investigating oligofluorene star-shaped structures for photonics and sensor applications and we report several series of new materials with multifunctional architectures. In this presentation we report on the synthesis, self-assembly and properties of these monodisperse macromolecules.

Stochastic oscillations, power law avalanches and dragon kings in quasi-critical systems
Prof. Dr. Osame Kinouchi
Departamento de Física – FFCLRP – USP

Resumen:

In the last decade, several models with network adaptive mechanisms (link deletion-creation, dynamic synapses, dynamic gains) have been proposed as examples of self-organized criticality (SOC) to explain neuronal avalanches. However, all these systems present stochastic oscillations hovering around the critical region that are incompatible with standard SOC and has been called self-organized quasi-criticality (SOqC). Here we make a linear stability analysis of the mean field fixed points of a SOqC model of discrete time stochastic spiking neurons. Firing rate adaptation, produced by dynamic neuronal gains, tunes the system toward the critical region. We find that the fixed points correspond to barely stable spirals that turn out indifferent at criticality where a Neimark-Sacker bifurcation occurs. This near indifference means that finite-size fluctuations can excite stochastic oscillations and avalanches, producing a mechanism for the emergence of dragon king events. The coexistence of these different types of neuronal activity is an experimental prediction that differs from standard SOC models.

Classical and quantum bounds on multi-system equality

Ernesto F. Galvão – UFF

Resumen:

I will describe how we can use logic to impose constraints on the probability of the conjunction (AND) of n propositions. This is an example of logical coherence inequalities that were first investigated by George Boole (1854). By taking each proposition to be about the equality of two systems, we obtain a logical coherence condition for the joint equality of multiple systems. I will then show that quantum mechanics violates this condition, and obtain bounds for the quantum violation. This enables us to bound the value of unmeasured two-state overlaps, with applications in quantum optics and quantum information.
This is joint work with Daniel Brod.
