Frequently Asked Questions:
1) Apostille for diplomas
It is mandatory that the undergraduate diploma be properly apostilled (Hague Convention). Institutional stamps or QR codes do not substitute for the apostille.
Students must arrive in Brazil with their diploma apostilled, as it will be required when officially submitting documents to the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC).
2) Certified translation
UFSC requires a certified translation into Portuguese of all documents not in Portuguese, including diplomas and birth certificates.
3) Scholarship Implementation
The scholarship is not implemented immediately upon arrival in Brazil. The scholarship can only be awarded after:
– The Federal Police issues the RNM;
– A bank account is opened at Banco do Brasil;
– The award documents are signed in advance for submission to the funding agency.
The bank account can only be opened after the RNM is issued, which may result in a delay (ranging from weeks to a few months) between the award and the start of payments. Each funding agency also has its own scholarship disbursement window (CAPES’s is generally in the first half of the month, but this may vary). Once this window has passed, the scholarship can only be activated in the following month.
The first installment of the scholarship is generally paid in the month following the start of the scholarship period. For example, a CAPES scholarship activated in March, effective starting in March, will be paid in April. FAPESC scholarships must be activated before the scholarship period begins, in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the funding agency’s calls for proposals.
It is the candidate’s sole responsibility to provide the required documentation in accordance with the instructions sent by the PPGFSC, well in advance so that the scholarship can be processed within the appropriate timeframe.
