ATTENTION!!!!
Validity of the admissions process and scholarships
The 2026-2 admissions process remains valid until the publication of the final results of the 2027-1 admissions process.
Enrollment may be completed after the regular enrollment period if the candidate is awarded a scholarship within this validity period.
Scholarship Call
The scholarship allocation call for 2026-2 is currently under institutional review and will be published later. Please note that students interested in competing for scholarships, including those already enrolled as regular students (without submitting a new enrollment application), must apply through the admissions process, since the ranking in this process will be used as a criterion for scholarship allocation.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Admission Calls
Does the admissions call specify scholarship distribution by research area?
No. The admissions call concerns only the academic selection process. Scholarship distribution will be defined in a separate call.
When will the scholarship call be published?
The scholarship call is currently under institutional review and will be published soon.
Advising Quotas
Are the advising quotas listed on the website always up to date?
The quotas are updated based on institutional data and verified with faculty members.
Why is a quota not released even when there is an expected completion date?
In cases such as sandwich PhD programs (CAPES-PDSE), the scholarship is temporarily suspended and resumed upon the student’s return.
If two candidates compete for the same quota, who has priority?
Priority is given to the candidate with the highest ranking, while observing affirmative action policies.
The other candidate may keep the same advisor without a scholarship or indicate a new advisor during the appeals period.
Advising and Scholarships
I was admitted with an advisor who has no available quota. What now?
You may keep the same advisor without a scholarship or indicate another advisor with an available quota.
Can I change advisors in order to obtain a scholarship?
Yes, during the appeals period and with the agreement of the new advisor.
Can I receive a scholarship from another funding source?
Yes, provided it complies with the current regulations.
Contacting potential advisors
What should I include when contacting potential advisors? Does contacting a faculty member guarantee an acceptance letter?
Applicants are encouraged to send a brief and objective message including:
- academic background and home institution;
- academic transcript and CV;
- previous research experience (undergraduate research, final projects, internships, publications, etc.);
- research interests and possible topics of interest;
- reasons for being interested in the faculty member’s research group or research area.
Generic messages without basic academic information or supporting documents may make it difficult for faculty members to evaluate the request.
The initial contact does not guarantee an acceptance letter. Its purpose is to allow both the faculty member and the applicant to evaluate academic compatibility and advising availability.
The faculty member may request additional information and may eventually schedule a remote meeting via videoconference (Zoom, Google Meet, or similar platforms) before deciding whether to provide an acceptance letter.
Affirmative Action Policies
Is there a different minimum passing score for affirmative action candidates?
No. There is no different minimum passing score for affirmative action candidates. All applicants must meet the minimum approval criteria established in the admissions call.
The affirmative action system guarantees the reservation of the percentage of positions established institutionally, but it does not waive the minimum score requirements defined for each research area.
Please refer to item 8.3 of the admissions call and the additional criteria for each research area.
Documentation and Application
How can I obtain an advisor acceptance letter if I do not know any UFSC faculty members?
Information about faculty members and their contact details is available on the PPGFSC website. Candidates are encouraged to contact faculty members directly whose research interests are compatible with their academic background and research interests, presenting their CV, academic records, and research interests.

Is it mandatory to indicate an advisor during the application process?
Yes. In Astrophysics and Theoretical Physics, an acceptance letter from a faculty member accredited by the PPGFSC is required. In Experimental Physics, it is necessary to submit a research proposal approved by the advisor, as established in the admissions call.
Certificates and supporting documents
My event certificate does not state that the presentation was oral. Can I submit additional documentation?
Yes. In this case, you may attach additional documentation to your application that confirms this information, such as the list of presentations, the event program, or a screenshot/scanned copy of the official schedule, together with the participation certificate.
