New results from the Fermilab Muon g-2 experiment
Prof. Dr. Frederick Gray
Department of Physics & Astronomy, Regis University – USA
Resumen
The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon comes from its couplings to virtual particles, and it determines the rate at which its spin rotates as it moves through a magnetic field. Since it was measured in an experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the early 2000s, a discrepancy of approximately 3 standard deviations has been seen between Standard Model predictions and the experimental result. The Muon g-2 collaboration at Fermilab recently released its first measurement, which agreed well with the Brookhaven result; together, the two experiments indicate a 4.2 standard deviation discrepancy with the Standard Model. This difference has been interpreted in terms of models of new particles and interactions that might also account for dark matter in the Universe. This talk will focus primarily on the experimental methods and analysis techniques in the Fermilab experiment, and on the systematic errors that affect the measurement
