Organic Electronics: A solution to our energy challenges?

Abstract:
As the world economy rebounds, it is expected that the worldwide demand for energy will be doubled by 2030. While there are alternative energy sources to address the energy challenges, energy efficiency and renewable energy are the approaches with the least impact on the environment. In this talk, I will present one potential solution to address two major energy challenges: low cost photovoltaics and high efficiency lighting. In contrast to inorganic semiconductors, organic semiconductors can be “made to order” by chemistry and offer added technological value due to their mechanical flexibility, light weight and compatibility with high volume roll-to-roll processing. I will first present the recent advances made in both photovoltaic and solid state lighting devices based on organic semiconductors and discuss the current scientific and technological challenges. Specifically, we will show how some of the material properties affect the device performance and demonstrate what approaches we take to address these issues. At the end, we will present the outlook of organic electronics for energy solutions and the future research direction.
