We can safely say that the quantization of the gravitational field is the most important problem we have in physics since the discovery of the General Theory of Relativity and of Quantum Mechanics. These theories, which rest in the basis of all physics, are fundamentally incompatible. Since them, many solutions have been proposed, with the most important candidates being String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity. In this colloquium, I will start by presenting an introduction to this problem, based on the very definition of spacetime. After this, I will briefly comment on the main idea behind string theory and loop quantum gravity, followed by a discussion of a new, recently proposed, theory. As an application, I will derive the Unruh effect, a paradigmatic result in quantum field theory.
