O PROGRAMA DE PÓS-GRADUAÇÃO EM FÍSICA convida para o seminário:

Rediscovering the Milky Way: New Galactic Globular Clusters*

Prof. Dr. Dante Minniti

Instituto de Astrofísica – Universidad Andrés Bello, Chile

*Evento de presença obrigatória da disciplina seminários

Resumo:
The Milky Way, our Galaxy, is a vast entity that remains largely unexplored. We have carried out a large Galactic near-IR survey called VISTA Variables of the Via Lactea (VVV) and its extension VVVX.

Our survey mapped the Southern Galactic plane and bulge for the past 12 years, covering about 1700 sqdeg in total. We have obtained multi-epoch observations for each field using the ZYJHKs filters, monitoring millions of variable sources. I will describe in particular our search for new globular clusters in the Milky Way, and the follow-up studies carried out to characterize the newly discovered objects. My goal is to try to answer how many globular clusters are there in the Milky Way.

I will probably not have time to ask some other questions like:

How many planets in our Galaxy? What kinds of planets are there? Where are they?

How many hypervelocity stars (HVS) are there in the Milky Way? Where can we find these HVS?

How many and what kinds of black holes (BHs) in the Milky Way? How can we find them? How are they distributed?

How many advanced alien civilizations are there in our Galaxy? Where are they? How to find them?

In the end, if you are optimistic, you may conclude that we are cosmic explorers, making some interesting discoveries. However, if you are pessimistic, you may think that we still know very little about our Galaxy.

Finally, I will state my wish for the future: that the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope carries out a deeper near-IR survey of the Milky Way plane.
