THE PHYSICS GRADUATE PROGRAM invites everyone to the seminar:
“Particle-vortex duality and applications to condensed matter”
Prof. Dr. Horatiu Stefan Nastase – IFT/USP
Abstract:
Dualities are powerful tools used for describing nonperturbative physics. In 2+1 dimensions, particle-vortex duality is less studied compared to 3+1 dimensional counterparts, but has important implications for condensed matter. I show how it can be defined at the level of the path integral, and how it can be generalized to a nonabelian situation. Particle-vortex duality fits into a web of interesting dualities in 2+1 dimensions, and I show how they can be used in the description of topological insulators and superconductors. When describing the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect, a new type of vortices appear, with delta function sources, that presumably should make it easier to relate them to particles.
