  Kelvin: past, present and future.

 Abstract:

Four basic physical units of SI, viz., kilogram, ampere, mole, and kelvin will be redefined in 2018. Their definitions will be related to universal physical constants such as Planck constant, elementary charge, number of Avogadro and Boltzmann constant. At the moment, great efforts are being done to measure these constants with a high accuracy. The lecture gives a brief history of the kelvin definition. Its future definition via the Boltzmann constant will be presented. Experimental and theoretical results related to the future definition of kelvin are reviewed.

  Copper-based molecular machines

Abstract:

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016 was awarded jointly to Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L. Feringa “for the design and synthesis of molecular machines”. Always Involving interlocked molecules such as catenanes and rotaxanes, the molecular machines developped by the group of Jean-Pierre Sauvage during the last 25 years are all based on the dynamic coordinating properties of transition metals, and mainly copper. From the first twisting catenane to the molecular press, this presentation will focus on the evolution of these copper-based molecular machines.

PS. From 2003 to 2008 Dr. Durola worked in Jean-Pierre’s group.

 Abstract:

Descrevemos diversos exemplos de aplicação dos métodos da Teoria de Campos em sistemas de Matéria Condensada que revelam amplamente a presença destas duas qualidades. Abordamos, em particular, os seguintes casos:

o Mecanismo de Higgs-Anderson e o Efeito Meissner, em física de partículas e supercondutores; os Mecanismos de Yukawa e Peierls, em física de partículas e polímeros; a Teoria Relativística de Dirac no grafeno e no siliceno; as propriedades de anyons não-abelianos e a computação quântica, estados topologicos da materia e, finalmente, os Férmions de Weyl, recentemente descobertos nos semimetais TaAs e NbAs.
