Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Professors

Can I use AI to write my paper (thesis/dissertation/article)?

CNPq recently published Ordinance 2664/2026 which regulates the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and other agents or LLMs, in scientific activity.

What is allowed:

  • Reviewing texts and organizing data;
  • Generating codes and ideas.

In these cases, the use of the tool must be detailed in the Methodology of the work (for example, which tool was used, on what date, what prompt was used).

What leads to punishment:

  • AI plagiarism: attributing generated text as your own. In other words, not explicitly mentioning that a section of the text was generated by AIs.
  • False data: AI hallucinations treated as facts. For example, the AI generated a text with references, but the references do not exist; or the text attributed by the AI to that reference does not match what is actually in it; among countless other cases.
  • Omission of citation: not declaring the use of AI in the Methodology of the work.

It is important to emphasize that methodological honesty is an ethical issue and subject to legal measures by CNPq or other institutions. This can lead to severe consequences both for the scholarship holder and for the PPGFSC.

Consequences of misuse:

  • Immediate cancellation of the scholarship;
  • Full reimbursement of the amounts received;
  • Prohibition from receiving other benefits from CNPq for up to 10 years.

We suggest that you read the ordinance in full, as well as the official note published on the CNPq website.

How to use the CAPES benefit for paying Publication Fees?

On April 30, 2024, CAPES published Ordinance No. 120/2024, defining the rules for payment of Article Processing Charges (APC).

The corresponding author must have a valid ORCID registered on the Meus Dados CAPES platform, in addition to following other requirements of the ordinance, such as acknowledging CAPES support with the following text (in the language of the article’s publication):

  • “The Article Processing Charge for the publication of this research was funded by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPES (ROR identifier: 00x0ma614). For open access purposes, the authors have assigned the Creative Commons CC BY license to any accepted version of the article.”

More information is available on the Portal de Periódicos.

How to cite CAPES financial support in articles and other works?

According to CAPES Ordinance No. 206, dated September 4, 2018, when there is financial support from CAPES for the work, whether in the form of scholarships for graduate students, support for events, etc., CAPES must be acknowledged using the following expressions (depending on the language of the work):

  • “This work was carried out with the support of the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – Brasil (CAPES) – Finance Code 001”;
  • “This study was financed in part by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – Brasil (CAPES) – Finance Code 001”.
