Exploring quantum quasi-crystal patterns: A variational approach
Prof. Dr. Alejandro Mendoza Coto
UFSC/FSC
Abstract:
In the present seminar I will discuss the emergence of quasicrystal configurations in the ground-state phase diagram of bosonic systems interacting through pair potentials of Lifshitz’s type. By using a variational mean-field approach, we determine the relevant features of the corresponding potential interaction kind stabilizing such quasicrystalline states in two dimensions. Unlike their classical counterpart, in which the interplay between only two wave vectors determines the resulting symmetries of the solutions, the quantum picture relates in a more complex way to the instabilities of the homogeneous phase. Moreover, the quantum quasicrystal patterns are found to emerge as the ground state with no need of moderate thermal fluctuations. The study extends to the exploration of the excitation properties and the possible existence of superquasicrystals, i.e., supersolidlike quasicrystalline states in which the long-range nonperiodic density profile coexists with a nonzero superfluid fraction. Our calculations suggest that, in an intermediate region between the homogeneous superfluid and the normal quasicrystal phases, these exotic states indeed exist at zero temperature. Comparison with full numerical simulations provides a solid verification of the variational approach adopted in this paper.

Paulo Henrique Souto Ribeiro
GIQSUL – Departamento de Física Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina
Abstract:

Quantum Darwinism and the spreading of classical information in non-classical theories
Dr. Roberto Dobal Baldijão
Unicamp
Abstract:
Quantum Darwinism helps us to understand how our world ends up looking classical, besides being non-classical in nature. It posits that such emergence of a classical reality relies on the spreading of classical information from a quantum system to many parts of its environment. But what are the essential physical principles of quantum theory that make this mechanism possible? We address this question by formulating the simplest instance of Darwinism — CNOT-like fan-out interactions – in a class of probabilistic theories that contain classical and quantum theory as special cases. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for any theory to admit such interactions. We find that every theory with non-classical features that admits this idealized spreading of classical information must have both entangled states and entangled measurements. Furthermore, we show that Spekkens’ toy theory admits this form of Darwinism, and so do all probabilistic theories that satisfy principles like strong symmetry, or contain a certain type of decoherence processes. Our result suggests the counter-intuitive general principle that in the presence of local non-classicality, a classical world can only emerge if this non-classicality can be “amplified” to a form of entanglement.

Delta Baryons in Magnetized Neutron-Star Matter
Kauan Dalfovo Marquez
UFSC/FSC
Abstract:
Strong magnetic fields, such the ones expected to occur in the interior of neutron stars, can modify the microscopic composition of baryonic matter. In this work, we study magnetic field effects on neutron star matter containing the baryon octet and additional heavier spin-3/2 baryons (the deltas). We make use of different relativistic models for the equation of state of dense matter under the influence of strong magnetic fields, also considering the effects of the anomalous magnetic moment of leptons and baryons. We find that a strong magnetic field enhances the delta-baryon population in dense matter, while decreasing the relative density of hyperons. Astrophysical implications are drawn from the assumption that magnetic neutron stars are likely to contain delta-baryons in their interior.
